The Visit

Image unavailableIt's only a few days away!

The Visit is upon us... all the bits of the jigsaw of bringing Cristian over here have fallen into place, and pretty soon we'll be in a giant pulsing room filled with light and sound...

Crisitan is making his way thru Wellington, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Tokyo over the course of 3 weeks... a few little side missions are planned on the way, like to the hot pools in Taupo, breakfast at Eva's, a trip to Flipside and all the other essential bits...

Meanwhile this weekend, warm up with what is the cream of today's house via Discotek... Bassment Jaxx, Sneak and Doc Martin...

Broadcast
The Visit will be broadcast live via RealAudio.... Join the updater and check out this site a few days before the 13th for the link to the broadcast. in the meantime download realplayer.

We're working on a revised approach to Obscure at the moment... over the next few weeks the site will change significantly, with definately less emphasis on 'what's on', not that we've had a lot anyway (see lava for listings...) and more on NZ electronic artists... The latest addition to out catalog is now available, 50Hz lush drum/bass release Cycle Hum.

Insect like Cristian Vogel, one of the heavyweights of the UK Bleep and Bass dance scene is visiting New Zealand, Australia and Japan February '98...

We're flying Cristian Vogel through NZ and Australia, Then he's off to Japan for more gigs and some recording (he's producing a virtual band... with it's members connected across the net).

The Wellington gig will be a bit of an epic... A hybrid between sweaty clubland and one of the larger warehouse styles with music across 3 rooms, one with the new traditionalism of Cristians techno, the live works of LRS and Polarity, and the best of the upcoming tech djs in welly... upstairs will be a cross section of welly's future steppers (including a live set by 50Hz), While the very refined Matterhorn will be providing shooters and a bit of a beautific chill space...

In Auckland, LRS and Agent99 are making their way up to support Cristian alongside locals Mechanism, Clone and Matrix at an environmentally enhanced Herzog...SciFi house comes to Auckland...

25 Year old Cristian Vogel has prolific releases on Tresor Records of Germany (One of the definitive sources on the global techno scene) via his label Mosquito, under the No Future banner. Vogel was rated by Tresor as one of the top 6 djs internationally.

No Future also houses the innovative, uncompromising and irrepressible talents of techno explorers Neil Landstrumm, Si Begg and Tobias Schmidt to name a few.

10:00pm - midnight Zen midnight - 1:30am Mu 1:30am - 4:30 am Basement Jaxx 4:30am - 6:00am Cian

On Friday, February 6th (Waitangi Day), we invite you to join us for what will undoubtably be the 'ultimate Discotek'. For the first (and probably last) time, we have a triple international bill - covering house artists from the UK, Chicago and California.

In their first Australasian appearances, Brixton's leading production pair Felix Burton and Simon Ratcliffe, better known as 'Basement Jaxx' will take to the decks mixing their unique blend of the sweet & soulful to the abstract & mad - latin flavours to filtered acid.

DJ Sneak returns with friend and part-time dj partner Doc Martin. These are the big men of house music; two of the most respected house producer dj's in the world. DJ Sneak shook Discotek 2 in June, playing five of the most solid hours of house ever heard on two decks in Wellington. Doc Martin educated us in '97 with his unique style of dark, hypnotic house appreciated by those who were lucky enough to attend last winter. This pair are back and promise to be bigger than ever.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal will be transformed by our design team in true Discotek style. Both rooms will be filled with our trademark, crystal clear, Quinn Audio JBL sound and intelligent lighting by Martin. Local support is provided by Cian & Mu of the Fonky Monks, Zen of the Jewel Skool and Discotek residents Andee & Schmoo.

Basement Jaxx
Expect deep soulful garage faultlessly morphed into more up-front house and South American rhythms. As Felix said, 'a lot of the people making house at the moment are not into keeping it real, the feeling of it, the funkiness if it, and that's why most house music isn't up to mush. People are just getting away with it'.

DJ Sneak
Let's go way back. Years after Chicago based djs and producers like Frankie Knuckles, Lil' Louis, and Marshal Jefferson all made their own indelible marks on house music, a new breed has risen from the depths of the windy city's sleepy house underground. At the forefront of this musical resistance is DJ Sneak who's twisted disco loops have been setting the world ablaze, spicing 'em up Chicago style.

Doc Martin
Doc Martin is all over the place. With residencies on both coasts and more than frequent guest appearances in the UK and Ibiza with Cream, Ministry of Sound and Back to Basics he has more frequent flyer miles than the space shuttle crew! If you haven't heard him out, you haven't been out. Martin spins a blend of hard and soft, deep and soulful, straight up and trippy tracks served to take you up, down and up again.

Obscure's Second release... Debut album from the LRS... check this mini review:
Homegrown electronica feels like it's coming of age with albums like Syntax by Wellington project LRS (Obscure). I refuse to be an apologist for local music and with this album I don't need to; it can stand on the international electronica scene with pride. A lot of the time there's not a lot happening between it's skeletal rhythms, bringing to mind some of the minimal German techno that's so hip to namedrop. It also reminds me of early period Autechre (for its clean spaciousness), and Seefeel (for it's queasy time-stretching ability and enjoyable wisps of hallucinogenic sfx).
