A certain kind of mellow sets in on a Sunday evening, its a busy place, and an exciting time for New Zealand and international dance, Tim from The Matterhorn told me today "You don't have to go to everything... But you can go out and do something every night of the week now in Wellington".

After all this time doing it, I'm still absorbing the evening environments Wellington throws my way... Thursday night I went to the Wellington Film Festival preview of 'When We Were Kings', Cassius Clay, the prophet who danced! After recovering from that inspirational jolt, sought out the interiors of Club 2000, a wee bit early for Mechanism/Pedestrian but not too soon for smart drinks and AV (Iamnotacliche!)... Then up to the top of Cuba Street to Fidels, for a hash burger feast and a poster/flyer competition...

Poster prize for size and color goes to The Mad Professor this weekend at the ESCape Club, tix from MFC Ticketing, ESC or The Krazy Lounge.

Prize for best vibe portrayed on a flyer goes to EJM for Tom Thump. Thump is playing Queenstown (Winnie Bagoes Thursday 26.6) and Nelson (Black Fly/Able Tasman Tavern Friday 4.7)

Yeah... Wellington is rockin its way through winter,The Fonky Monks & Tom Thump, played at the Town Hall on Saturday 21.6, the evening of the full moon, the Maori new year (Matariki), and the winter solstice (yay! halfway thru winter)... Clearlight collective and The Full Moon Drummers took over Civic Square at 5.30 to pay homege to the ocassion with drums, fire, dance and music as the moon rose full and orange over the harbour... Monks in the town hall setting up a for an evening of sexy side steppin, new cool dance size bottles of Champagne, and super spunky boys and girls... Yeah!! Prizes for hats and hair go to Cheryl and Bronwyn from The Midnight...

I winessed the underground beginnings of a new club called Firm on Friday night, spastic spinning from Clint and Mahi in concrete surrounds, smoke and orange light... You'll hear about it... Another place that will attract conisuers of cool from far and wide is The Matterhorn, opening on July 4th 1997, expect a cuise bar for slick lounge dressers, fine music again assured from co-owner Leon (Fonky Monks, Jewel School) classy and cosy, with the finest of everything that sounds, tastes and feels good!

Bongmaster going strong down at ESC is a weekly option for looseness of soul and booty, Leon, Zen, Cian, Adam and Matt are The Jewel School, playing every week on Radio Active, and down at ESC with Bongmaster... Add one Mu, minus Adam and Zen and you have the Fonky Monks... Mu is in bed with everyone, other notches in include his Thursday Overdrive on Radio Active 7-9PM 89FM, residency at both La Luna and ESC, Subtronix and The Roots Foundation, playing around The Mad Professor this Friday will be further evidence of his heavyweight record... On and off the field Mu is a player!

Time to cruise to La Luna for The Cooker, the mellow vibe is reggae and dub on a Sunday! DJs and artists get those mix tapes and originals in, check the our Contact page.

If you're down South the Winter Festival is happening now in Queenstown, lookout for The Mad Prof on Nightline on TV3 sometime this week, buy yourself something nice, and always be good to the girl at the door. OK!

Ten four little beaver. [Teth]

Coming up this weekend...
The Mad Professor hits town on June 27, famed for his outstanding work with Lee Perry and of course The Mad Professor meets Massive Attack, this is his second visit here, and it is promised to be a night of slinky smooth live dub to make you skank like you never have before... He will be in Wellington at The ESCape Club, also playing Christchurch, Auckland and the closing ceremony of The Queenstown Winter Festival. Check him out

Saturday 28 is Lab 13 at 13 Garret Street... which finally sees Audrey getting a much deserved set alongside Cyrus and manu more... Expect some very pure sonics down that end of town. Check out the Lab 13 site for more information.

Big sloppy kisses out to Splash...

We're starting work on our second compilation of New Zealand electronica... maybe not a follow up to the driven techno of Skankatronics, but at this stage, hopefully a wider documentation of the state of the art in Aotearoa... If you are producing and would like to submit some tracks, please send us some samples of your work (see the Contact page for mailing details) or Email Obscure for further information...

There have been a large number of international House DJs coming Auckland's way over the last couple of months, it has seemed like a week hasn't gone by without some big name coming into town. This has been both entertaining, and educational; the DJs have both played well, to mostly responsive crowds, and yet shown that the line between good local DJs and top international DJs is very fine.

D.I.Y. played last Friday night, at the Box (which seems to host all top House DJs at the moment) to a small crowd. While good times can be had at the Box when the vibes there, when the floor isn't full, the atmosphere is decidedly frosty. While D.I.Y. did their best, there wasn't much they could do in the end to salvage the situation.

The Queen's Birthday Sunday held host to a number of parties, but one that's sure to enter into the book of legendary parties was Insurge, at Calibre. With the promoters wanting the night to go in the traditional long weekend Sunday night chilled vibe, everyone was looking forward to a nice relaxed evening.

This was what probably put everyone off guard, for when the dancefloor slowly packed out, and the music shifted from relaxing, smooth Basic Channel grooves to pulsing Detroit hardness the energy levels on the floor were reaching a boiling point.

With the completion of a sterling set by M 78, Plagiarist jumped into thecontrol booth, it was obvious that he didn't expect the kind of reaction he ended up getting! After a few tracks of flawless mixing, the crowd's last shred of dignity went out the door, all minds were cast back to famous movies such as Breakdance, and Beatstreet, when the floor formed a circle and people started to breakdance!!! With the crowd erupting in cheers, and yells the pace picked up even more, rolling into some jacking electronic madness.

When Surgeon's 'Magneze' was dropped, the crowd went mad, giving, in the words of Pedestrian, "a better response than when it was first dropped down at Eurobeat 2000!!"

From here on in the crowd went berserk to the nimble tricks, subtle crossfades, or outright slam mixing employed by the DJs, with the arrival of local hero Pedestrian, and the imminent dropping of Mill's new 'Kat Moda' the crowd once again opened up for another round of breakin', poppin, and headspinning!!!

Totally crazy night, mad crowd, excellent DJs, good grooves, and fine wine. You couldn't have asked for a better night! Respect to Ivan and Miles who set the pace with their own unique styles earlier in the night, and who allowed everyone to let go in such a big way!

The Breaks crew raised their collective heads once again on Thursday, at a new location, Herzog, where they laid down the deep breakbeat they're known for. It's going to be interesting to see if they can build their crowd back to it's original capacity number each week, but with the DJs on offer, it would be hard to keep breaks punters away!

On Saturday, Chicago groove merchant, DJ Sneak kicked into action at the Box. Overall he spun a wide selection of house, lifting the vibe, and dropping it where needed. A very well sequenced set, with house that, while got you moving, wasn't anything Auckland hadn't heard before. His skill on the decks was good, but at times he'd loose concentration and let the mixing falter. The only concern was the amount of times he made errors with the levels.

Admittedly the Box soundsystem is dodgy, and will respond better to some frequencies more than others, but there were some very discernible mistakes. Sneak didn't play much of the jacking Chicago style a lot of people hoped for, but he played a good solid house set that made for a good night out.

Mechanism interview in this month's Pavement, something to glue your eyes to. There's rumor of a CD from the man, under his Pedestrian guise, so keep those ears peeled. The sound will most probably be more Detroit techno based, and from what he's been dropping around Auckland over the last few months, it's bound to be brillient!

New zine Re:evolve is out this week, a small 12 page booklet, filled with reviews, articles, charts, and some lovely pictures of the Auckland electronic music front. It's got the Jeff Mills interview that was conducted on BFM all transcribed out for all who missed it. There are going to be some copies sent down to Wellington soon, but anyone who wants a copy just Email Obscure. Coming up in the next few weeks, another Full Circle at Calibre next week, and a party at Herzog on the 28th called QUADRANT which should be a wicked night out. There are a few rumors of some Solstace parties happening this weekend, out of town, but only a hour or so drive.
