Bass Frontiers - Grooverider and MCGQ.
Thursday 27 April 2000 Studionine, Wellington
Massive respect to all the headz who came to Sunday Sessions II. A wicked night for real with close to 300 people inside the dance. Big ups to the 48sonic who gave us a taste of some AK styles and also to Sean who rocked it with a seriously solid set. An ideal warm up for Thursday night and a great way to max out after what was a seriously large Easter Weekend in the Capital. Shouts to the Flipside posse for a cool 6th Birthday party on Thursday night with the BF boys B-Lo and Sean representing from 3am and providing the set of the night.

Grooverider has earned his name - "The Godfather". Forget the semantics -- darkstep, techstep, jump up -- Grooverider blends them all providing a full spectrum vision of the present state of Drum and Bass and a glimpse of the future. An all-encompassing attitude that's served him well on his journey from unknown pirate spinner to one of the biggest and most respected names in dance music today. Grooveriders twelve years behind the decks have seen him play everywhere from dodgy illegal warehouse parties to huge outdoor festivals to clubs throughout the UK and the rest of the world.
As resident at seminal London night Rage throughout its four year stint at Heaven, he personally oversaw dance music's evolution from acid house to techno and finally Drum and Bass. These days he organises Goldie's Metalheadz club nights usually topping bills that invariably read like a who's who of Drum and Bass. His legendary radio shows with longtime companion Fabio (first for Kiss FM and now Radio One FM) helped spread the gospel of Drum and Bass further and further a field The establishment of his own Prototype label back in 1993 first brought Groove's futuristic visions to vinyl and the majors chase to sign him first began.
Three years later he signed to Sony's Higher Ground imprint, bringing the 'Prototype Years' compilation shortly afterwards and then, over a year later, the rider's long awaited solo long player 'Mysteries of Funk'. After ten years involvement from inception to the present day, Grooverider explains what keeps him enthusiastic: 'If someone makes a tune I like I want to make a tune that's better - if someone plays a tune I like I want to play a tune that's better than that. It isn't a competitive thing for me, I just get my vibes from the music and when I hear a good tune it inspires me to go out and make good music.'
Enhancing the Grooverider experience will be the MC GQ. Arguably the ultimate Drum and Bass MC, he has been hyping the crowds for as long as Grooverider has been spinning. He is the MC of choice for many of the "A-list" Drum and Bass DJ's. GQ's powerful voice and mic skills have the potential to take any set beyond the next level. His last appearance in New Zealand alongside Andy C left many on the dancefloor begging for more. This visit will mark Grooveriders fifth visit to our shores and second appearance at Bass Frontiers. Those who managed to catch him at last years capacity gig will be under no doubt of this mans ability to tear up any dancefloor.
