Recently I have been attempting to promote my own club night in the city I live. It has been going badly. It is so bad that we pay for our own promotion, use our own gear and pay for our own drinks. How entertaining can that be?
To be honest I don't really care about the cost. Its means more to me than that, it is about presenting the music, making a statement. Besides if dance music was about money I should have quit 15 years ago when I threw my first party.
It has made me think though about promotion, events and weather or not we actually have a dance scene in New Zealand. If you look at the line ups of most parties that people go to they all have imported Dj's. Effectively no one turns up to gig with just local Dj's.
So we don't really have a dance scene. We have someone else's dance scene, an imported version. The majority of what is the 'dance scene' we pay hard cash to fly in from some other country. What's more we have been doing this for over a decade.
It makes you wonder really, what we do actually think of ourselves. It makes me wonder what the scene in NZ would be if spent all the money from internationals Dj's on our own people. Can we really afford to give ourselves that kind of credit?
Ps. this weekend go see Philippa in AK, Nomad in WGT & Turnstyle in CHCH
