Sonic Mass: 9.March.96
Sonic Mass
Sonic Mass crept up on way quickly - all of a sudden it's Saturday & I'm down at the Bassment, videoing the setup. The last few parties at that venue hadn't gone too well - a legacy of Noise Control busts, a fight, and exploding sound systems - although the ideas had always been pretty much in place. Sonic Mass was a pretty big venture, considering the risk of Noice Control coming in at 1.00 and telling everyone to go home (the Bassment is right next to the Plaza International hotel). When I got down to the actual party - about 11.00 it was in full swing - 600 or so ravers in full flight to dj Sweet's sub cheezy anthemic house - snare rolls abounding, Sweet slamming his fists into the air like some crazed crusty ... a theme that would run through the night (the slamming fists - not the crusties) this was going to be an UPLIFTING party...
Dj8 came on next - continuing on the house tip for a bit before moving into a bit of drum and bass. One aspect of this party that broke a few rules was the cross-genre styles - house, jungle, chicago and detroit sat happily next to each other, and the crowd lapped it all up - I really want more of this in the future... so many people seem to love to slag off jungle... and don't seem to realise it's the freshest style out.
MC Apollo ranted over everyone's sets - introducing The LRS (ushered in by Reece in digeridoo) for his live, slightly twisted pounding acid set. The crowd must have been one of the most responsive ever - yelling and screaming as the acid was peaked up, as they would later to Tjaden's destructive crossfader abuse at the end of the night. Mu Phattened out things a bit after the LRS with a cool house/jungle set before Omni, Genocyber, Tjaden and Conspiracy rounded off a fine night.
Sonic Mass receives a deserved ++ all round - production was on, the crowd was absolutely awesome - especially the little punk rockers snuggled up in the chill room (didn't spend much time in there, but a second dance floor of about 50 people emerged, as well as a little pool-shark corner and all round sweaty little room).
(Thanx to Rose and Clint for transport and help)
