PRG
On Saturday 28 October '95, PRG was Obscure's first larger-scale Warehouse party.
Featuring Djs Tjaden, Zero, Manu, DJ8, Flic and Ande E; The LRS Sound system live. Tribal fire eating, plastic fashion and more!
PRG has left me with mixed feelings about putting on parties and our little scene. It was my most ambitious party to date, and definatly the one I put most work into, but it severely lacked numbers. it's sooooo frustrating when you go to lengths to do something and no-one's around to notice it. Anyway, thanks to those who did come. consider it a give to the Wellington scene.Me and Mike were talking in a cafe one day about parties and I asked him if he wanted to do one.. to my surprise he said yes.. he didn't know anything about them, but was willing to give it a go.
We found a venue amazingly easily, one that i'd been trying to get for ages, but the guy wouldn't let me hire it because some guy got stabbed at a metal gig there (that i incidentally played at) a few years ago. But maybe it was cutting my hair off or something that did it. Anyway venue secured, posters printed, totally dodgy improvised radio ad, lights booked sound sussed, djs talked to (yo - no hardcore - i'm on a house trip) a few dj domestics when those who didn't get to play went and sulked. and a little bit of practise for the live set.
Friday night - the pallets for the dance floor don't turn up, early to bed.
Saturday morning - pallets turn up - late. Fork lift rrrrnnnn - dance floor starts assembling itself. Tarpaulins get strung up to make walls. Reece the mad lightman starts stringing flashy things from the rafters & hot rods the 3-phase to make them go, we run mad missions all over town trying to get all the missing little bits we need to put a rave together.
open about half an hour late people dribble in and dribble in. alarm bells go off. where are all the people. Midnight. mikes turn on the door. one oclock. mike turns up. where are the people. go home. have shower. crash on the floor. come back with xoxen boxen for live set. play. take the gear home again, come back with vinyl. play from 5 to 6 and stop playing. the 30 or so people left go uuuhhhhh... robyn says "just one more track for us to leave to..."
started playing one more track. turns in to about six more (about 4 if them of thee album). went home and got a couple of hours sleep next to my favourite yummy warm body.
Went back about ten in the morning and began packing down. rrrnnnn pallets come up. stop being dance floor and regress back to being tall wobbly towers of pallets. pack. tidy. pack. tidy. the guy who rind the building irie's us with a big fat blunt. we play soccer with a tennis ball. realise i didn't get to dance last night.. I'm fucked. sleep.
Less than 200 people came to PRG, one of the best productions of 95. Exams. overkill. too expensive (not), maybe the promotion was targeted wrong. those who came said it was the best party they've been to in ages. I think the music was wicked. the lights ripped. I'm happy. at least I learned to drive a forklift. just wish I'd actually had a chance to be at the party and have a dance for a while. next.
