The beginning of a New Zealand summer, usually sees the increase of population movement to the wickedness of the dub momentum... Strangley enough it seems all roots music drops off over winter and the dancing places are populated only by skinny white boys and acid house... Anyway the sun is shinning right now, and New Zealand music is blooming in the heat, Unitone HiFi is a prime example of the summer we want, with the release of their latest album 'Boomshot' The Hi-Fiers are packing our aural pipes and lighting the fire...

Unitone HiFi are Rootsman DJ Stinky Jim, Dutchieman Joost and Mo'Delay Angus McNaughton. All experienced dub-mysters from their past projects, Nemesis Dub Systems, and Sound Foundation. Between the three, releases have been abundant, Unitone tracks can be found on compilations "Deep in the Pacific of Bass" on the Deepgrooves label, Serenity Dub 1.1am, released on incoming!, King Size Dub Volume 2, on Echo Beach records(Germany), Crooklyn Dope Consortium Volume 2, released by Wordsound Records(NYC) and the upcoming release of Trace Pacific Express by Volume records(UK) due for release in January 1997. The Hi-Fiers also go under the alias of 'Crazy Baldheads' more electronik dancefloor orientated toons. Boomshot's textures vary from the smooth sound of'Sweet' and the lushness of 'Glass' to the dubwise deviance of 'Iron Gate', a fresh set of sonic experiments for wayward ears, dancing to these bass movements can be compared to drowning in jazz dubs where the voices in your head are coming from the speakers, Unitone has the heart and the soul of a soundsystem called pleasure... Stinky Jim answers few questions over an E-mail sesh... I asked him about maintaining freshness of style without being influenced too much by trends... he said "We are definitely making the music we want to... For me Unitone HiFi is the kind of sounds Id like to be able to DJ with even if someone else was making them. Any Dj who makes music will be motivated by his own turntable perspective and experience, however with the heartical HiFi we also have the benefits of production and musical back up(from Joost and Angus) that easily equals my fifteen years behind the decks" Teth asks "How about Jamaica and New York?" "If there were four points on the Unitone compass the would probably be New Zealand for the vibes, NYC for the blunts beats and boom, Jamaica for the origins, the future, and the total devotion to sound science and London for the ability to mix all of that shit up and stay standing" Unitone HiFi is a force to behold, weed related rhythms to melt away your blues. Hopefully NZ will see Unitone teamed up with Lava Lava on a tour early 97, New Years confirmation from the bluntheads is still shaky, if I were you I'd pray they are gonna be where you are for the turn of 1997.
