Amon Tobin... Born in Rio de Janeiro, Amon Tobin travelled to Europe at an early age, only to return to Brazil a few years later. On his eventual return to the UK in his teens, Amon continued his love of all things hip hop blues and jazz investing a lot of his time and energy listening to artists such as Grandmaster Flash, Lightning Hopkins, Eddie Palmieri, Thelonius Monk, etc. At the age of 17 Amon began his first foray into experimenting with music by investing in a hardware sequencer, along with what he calls a "horrible little Casio sampling keyboard". Two years on, at the age of 19, with his wanderlust still not satisfied, he went to live in Portugal and Madeira taking all his equipment with him. He made a living working as a street tout and relaxed by playing harmonica, saxaphone, guitar and keyboards in blues bands as well as jamming with strangers. Amon returned to the UK in 1994 settled in Brighton not wanting to be too far from the sea in this "wet, grey country" and started a degree course in photography. The experience he had gained through his many travels, listening to different types of music urged him to formalise his musical ideas and in 1994, on his return to the UK, Amon made up some tapes of his own tracks and sent them out to a few labels on the off-chance that they may be interested. The two labels which replied were HOS and Ninebar, leading to his first ever release being on HOS. He found putting out his record a good learning experience, but readily admits that the record was, in his own words "crap" and decided he was more in tune with Ninebar and their abstract and eclectic output. With Ninebar he has released four 12"s and the 'Adventures in Foam' album under the name CUJO. In autumn 1996 Amon signed up to do some records for Ninja Tune under his own name. The four track 'Creatures EP' was released in November '96, followed by the 'Chomp Samba EP' and 'Bricolage LP' in the first half of 1997. He will continue releasing records under both names. Amon's music draws on jazz, hip hop, drum & bass, samba and bossa nova. He hates backpackers and bearded world music people but loves the exoticism of far flung and strange places.

The Herbaliser.. The Herbaliser are lead by Jake Wherry and DJ Ollie Teeba. They work from their home made studio in a Twickenham warehouse called TrainTrax. Jake Wherry grew up in South London. A diet of jazz and James Brown provided the soundtrack of his childhood and teenage years. He naturally found himself getting into rare groove and old school hiphop, and played guitar and bass in many jazz, funk and rock bands. He currently plays bass for a jazz-funk six piece called 'The Propheteers'. Ollie Teeba caught the DJ bug at the tender age of 15, and progressed from spinning around on the floor to spinning tunes in his bedroom to playing clubs and warehouses. At the age of 16 he was cutting up hip hop, funk and electro at Ben & Andy's Boilerhouse in Kingston, and later one offs at the Jazz Cafe, Toto, Urban Soul, Milk Bar and Africa Centre among others.Last year Ollie compiled the 'Classic Hiphop Mastercuts' album for Beechwood and Volume 2 is currently in production. Ollie's spare passion is for trainers - he owns over 50 pairs. In 1992, Jake decided to build his own studio to record his own music and to get into production. A mutual love of anything fat and jazzy brought the pair together - after Ollie had co-produced a Propheteers record, the two decided to make music together and 'The Herbaliser' was born. After meeting DJ Food in a club a few months later, Ninja Tune became their home. With the help of Malachi with some crusty 7" samples, Patrick Dawes (percussion), Ralph Lamb (horns) and Kaidi Tatham (keyboards), Jake and Ollie produced the first Herbaliser single, a limited edition 12" 'The Real Killer/Blowin It'. 'The Real Killer' can be found on the Ninja Cuts compilation released early 1995. Also in '95 The Herbaliser released a second single 'Repetative Loop/Scratchy Noise' and the album 'Remedies' released autumn '95. Currently Ollie Teeba is DJing worldwide with the rest of the Ninja Tune 'Stealth' crew , while Jake is studio bound working on numerous other projects such as 'The Meateaters' released on 'Big Cheese Records', as well as both remixing various other artists including DJ Food's 'Mella' for the Refried Food album, Raw Stylus' single 'Changes' and the incredible 'Post Nuclear After-Life Lounge mix' of Coldcut's 'Atomic Moog' (No.1 in the NME indie chart) The Herbaliser sound lies between turntables and trombones, updating a deep jazz & hip hop sound with today's sophisticated production techniques; whilst keeping a vibrant feel to their music, courtesy of some thumping double-bass, horn section and heavy use of breaks. Once upon a rhyme, a kool an' deadly crew of bredren an' sistren landed on the Planet known as Earth after travelling many aeons through distant galaxies, on a quest to discover the meaning of Flip-flop. They were discovered shell-toe-shocked from an unpleasant entry into the phatmosphere somewhere on Bethnal Green Rd by an ancient wizard cunningly disquised as a home-improvements merchant. He instantly clocked their huge potential, and so took them home to meet his mother, Ol Ma Ninja. After a couple of cups of tea to settle their space-worn nerves, the possee of aliens immediately realised that this chance occurence was actually the beginning of the true destiny... a couple of months indoors with their freshly acquired turntables, a sampler, a few anoraks and a copy of Dr. John's 'the Night Tripper' and they were ready to Check the Species. Under the banner of Ninja Choon, the unleashed a veritable tempest of creativity on the unsuspecting mases, spreading into homes and ears like a Provence forest fire on Prozac. Not content with assaulting the eardrums of all those that fell in their path, they decided to write a manual designed to alleviate a lucky few from the illoosion of pain and suffering that much of the hip-population seemed to be under... |
