Wellington City
Wellington's music culture spans many forms of dance, from the dub & reggae of the Roots Foundation, acid trance of Eden to the dub, house and hip hop played in clubs. Mutations and deviations of this music are listened to in bedrooms and walkmans, and on air throughout the city.
A lot of the younger set are into hard acid and trance, and they seem to have the energy to keep slamming away to it all night, but in the underground local djs are constantly exploring, reaching in to new and established areas - expanding on current taste and exploring new areas; hard house, minimal techno, drum + bass, hip-hip detroit and electro. Over the next year we could see some new and exciting progresions.
Wellington also has a strong live music scene, and some of this has carried over into the electronic area. Live sound systems have been a feature of parties over the last couple of years and are becoming more accepted as people grasp the idea.
Often a live PA been more of a listening experience than a dance one, due to the nature of using a computer compared to spinning vinyl and that the music has been more experimental.
There seem to be more and more producers sprouting up all the time, all in various stages of productivity.
