BrazilBeat Sound System is a DJ-drums collective that originated in San Francisco, California in 2000. The project continued to evolve as two of its members came to Aotearoa the following year. The reception in NZ was so good for their deep mix of funked-up electronic-Brazilian music, that they began spending more and more time here.

Live drumming and percussion are the roots of BrazilBeat. Internationally renowned Brazilian master percussionist Nego Beto sets the tempo with drum rhythms that have come down through 400 years of African presence in Brazil--samba, afoxé, ijexá, xangô. The familiar drumbeat of capoeira takes on a new fire when coupled with dancehall-style MCing, infused with thunderous basslines.

Nego Beto has taken his rhythms to five continents, touring, recording and educating over his 20 year career. His signature MC style and riveting performances on congas, timbales, bongos, drum machines and varied percussion instruments send audiences into delerium.

DJ Mara spins Brazilian and world music without boundaries alongside funky house, deep spiritual grooves, dub and drum'n bass.

BrazilBeat began producing original tracks early on in the project. "Rain" and "Comigo Ninguem Pode," were released as vinyl sides in the US by Pollen Records. "Rain" and 'Capoeira Dub" came out on the Kaiti Collective cd in NZ in early 2004 (http://www.tetoka.com). A new remix of "Rain" is being released this month (Sept) on the compilation Bits Sessions by Nikita Music in Brazil and Europe.
