BASS FRONTIERS 02 --

Thursday April 29th Studionine, Edward St, Wellington 10pm

Hold tight for a taste of one Christchurch[base ']s premiere Drum and Bass selectors:

DJ MOSUS --

++ Christchurch direct --- Scientific

Moe began playing a blend of Hip Hop and Drum and Bass in 1995 before switching to spinning strictly Jungle. He describes his approach to playing as "Full Spectrum" meaning as long as the track is solid and will fit in the mix he will play it regardless of its style. Recently returning from a trip to the UK, Moe had the opportunity to play on Pirate Station, Syndicate FM whilst over there. He also managed to pick up some exclusive Dubplates, which he will undoubtedly be rolling out for us at 02. As a key member of the Scientific kru in Christchurch, Moe produces and promotes many regular and one off events whilst maintaining the Scientific Radio Show on RDU. A weekly 3 hours of rolling breaks and dubplate specials across the airwaves.

CONSPIRACY -- Uncompromising and forever faithful in his support of the Welly scene, Conspiracy has been tearin[base '] up dancefloors and exploring new territories of funk for a good 6 years now. Making him one of the capitals longest serving breaks deckticians. During his time behind the decks he has had the opportunity to play alongside Dom and Roland, Doc Scott, DJ Trace and Ed Rush. He has been a regular player for Grind for a long time featuring in all of our events to date. Conspiracy is also responsible for starting Radio Active[base ']s weekly dose of drum and bass, Future Funk, he remains an integral part of the show to this day. Preferring to mix it up a little rather than stick to any one particular sound, his style varies from techier sounds right through to slabs of pure funk.

PIXIE -- Pixies tight skills and seamless mixing have often left many wondering why he is so underrated in this city. He got bitten by the DJ bug about 2 and a half years ago and hasn't looked back since. Choosing to take the "Full Spectrum" approach to his sets, Pixie will drop whatever the occasion calls for be it some smooth sounds or some beats from the harder edge. Experience to date includes mashing up the dancefloors @ Steps, Unsound and Number8wire. He has also supported Drum and Bass legend Andy C during his last visit to NZ and maintains a residency @ Cafe Up every Friday night for there "Funked UP Friday" series.

SEAN -- Sean began spinning in [OE]96 with his first gig playing support for Fierce and Nico in Christchurch. He then moved to Wellington last year and has quickly developed a following and reputation as one of the capitals premiere drum and bass DJ[base ']s. He describes his style as "Funky and Runnin[base ']" with many of his sets built around the familiar techstep sound. Always tight in the mix, Sean has a very distinctive rolling flavor. He has supported many of the international DJ[base ']s who have made their way over here recently including the likes of Doc Scott, Grooverider, Kemistry and Storm, Ed Rush and Optical, and Andy C. The labels he sites as his main influences are Full Cycle, V, and Freeform.

Grind presents

BASS FRONTIERS SPECIAL EDITION 02 --

+ DOC SCOTT (Metalheadz/31 Records, UK)

+ MC JUSTIYC (Metalheadz, UK)

THURSDAY MAY 13th @ Studionine, Wellington

Grind in association with Subtronix and Radio Active 89FM is pleased to present two of the true innovators working and Djing within the world dance music scene today.

DOC SCOTT (Metalheadz/31 Records, UK)

"The King of the Rollers"

" One things for sure when it comes to Doc Scott he is definitely a natural and he's definitely rollin" - Goldie

Doc Scott is at the top of the tree. He is one of the most highly respected deck technicians in his field, has his own record label and commands a vast back catalog of quality productions. Co-founder of the legendary Metalheadz Recordings, and slowly establishing his own 31 Records with a growing roster of releases. Scott has always been at the forefront of the Drum and Bass scene.

Although he has a busy production schedule Scott is probably best known for his innovative DJ sets, from the Liquid Rooms in Tokyo, to the raves in LA and Boston, to his residency at the legendary Metalheadz. Doc Scott is one of the most consistent and groundbreaking DJs there is, inspiring up and coming junglists wherever he plays. You won't just hear one style in his sets, he will blend tech step into dark step into jump up with consummate ease. "I try and represent 360 degrees as best I possibly can. There's too much good music out there to ignore. I never wanna go beyond the dance, playing 'non-dance' dance music, but at the same time I have to be true to myself. I wanna play the most up front progressive music there is."

Scott's work sometimes has a slightly schizophrenic edge. The powerful nail biting tension surrounding 'Shadow Boxing' is juxtaposed with the blissful melancholy of 'Chillin' Out' on 31 and 'Tokyo Dawn' released on LTJ Bukem's Good Looking imprint. 'Shadow Boxing' was to some extent an experiment, the track that was rinsed by almost every DJ in the Drum and Bass world, was put together in a meager three hours. "When you come home from a party there's always one tune, one riff, spinning around in your head. More likely than not you're never gonna find out what it is". I said to myself "I wanna make that loop." And that he did, that track will go down in history as a defining point in the evolution of the form. Detroit is, and has been, a major influence in Scott's life especially when it comes to production. "The main three, Derrick (May), Kevin (Saunderson) and Juan (Atkins), you break their tracks down and they have so much soul. That's what I try to translate today. I never want the music, no matter how much technology is available, to lose its soul, funk and feeling. That's the essence, the key, and the goal. If you can go back to a piece of work that's five years old and listen to it now, it may sound a bit rough round the edges but still it could've been made last week."

With people like Doc Scott at the helm, drum and bass will continue to be the most innovative, cutting edge form around, picking up where techno left off and taking electronic music to new unexplored levels.

appearing alongside Doc Scott will be:

MC JUSTIYC (Metalheadz, UK)

For over two years, Justiyc has been resident MC for the Metalheadz club nights. His talent, style and unique feeling for the music as well as his intuition make him very vibey but never overpowering, something very rare, thats greatly appreciated by the likes of DOC SCOTT and ED RUSH who really don[base ']t like anything to interfere with the flow of the mix. He is one of the people responsible for building the now legendary "Metalheadz Sunday Sessionz at the Blue Note" into a world-renowned club and has worked with Doc Scott on a regular basis, for good reason. He now tours regularly worldwide with Doc Scott. Both of their natural talents gel as if they[base ']ve been working together for many years with Justiyc[base ']s unique understanding of Doc Scott[base ']s style of Djing making Bass Frontiers Special Edition 02 essential for any true Drum and Bass head.

Those who caught MC GQ earlier this year will not want to miss the second of the worlds "A-Team" of Drum and Bass MC[base ']s to come to our shores in 99.
