The Living Room is a weekly half-hour TV program celebrating the emerging talents of New Zealand artists, performers and musicians.
It's a show for all New Zealanders, with subjects as diverse and richly cultured as the audience themselves.
In The Living Room, the artists have no restrictions on how or where they tell their story.
Further, rather than the professional immaculate presenter, each week different artists are picked from one of the stories to link the line up of features from their own personal space (be it their living room or their bubble bath).
Everyone from Trinity Roots to The Naked Samoans - though for reasons of decency we'll throw in a few lava lavas.
After the Living Room was first broadcast a couple of weeks ago, it received the best ratings for 18-49year olds in it's time slot and rave reviews from the media and people on the street.
This week The Living Room took a break, but it's back on the 11th November.
TV3, 11 Nov, Mon 11pm
The Living Room - Presented by McTali
This week we catch singer/ composer McTali in her posh Wellington hotel room as she tours the country with renowned UK Drum'n'Bass artist, DJ Bailey. As she relaxes between rehearsals she introduces us to the making of a music video for dub band, Rhombus. In Dunedin we check out what artist and musician Alastair Galbraith is now up to, and in Wanganui check out the very talented Maiangi Waitai, a young artist who creates mythical creatures out of recycled tin!
McTali: Singer/ Composer/ MC
The Living Room heads to Bristol where McTali is currently based. As she shows us around parts of the old Bristol city, we hear about her aspirations, and what it's like to be living her dream working with some of the top names in drum'n'bass. We hear Tali's music and songs and see her shakin' her bootie as she performs live.
Maiangi - Designer/ Artist/ Recycling Guru
Wanganui art school graduate Maiangi Waitai has been making a name for herself with her reconstructed clothing line, tin cut out art, sleeping masks and painted suitcases. We follow Maiangi as she heads off for a jumble sale rummage around Wanganui, searching for those lost treasures that might make the basis for her next fashion creation. She also demonstrates her tin cut out art and she explains how Wanganui has fostered her talent and her passions.
Alastair Galbraith - violinist/musician/visual artist
We get a look into Alastair's unique and bohemian lifestyle from his bach on the Taieri Plain. He reflects on the influences that helped shape his music development in the 80's and 90's. He also invites us to explore his Dunedin City studio - filled with unusual art. His inventiveness extends to new materials and media - with some paintings created from the resin that collects on the surface of old house paint tins. We check out the crazy sounds of his "Flame Organ" created from piping heated from Bunsen burners in the Wanganui Drury Tunnel. Alastair Galbraith is a man following his passions and living life his own unique way.
Rhombus: Goodbye Pork Pie Tribute
We spend a hectic day in Wellington shooting the filming of the Rhombus music video "Clav Dub" that plays homage to the Goodbye Pork Pie film. The tribute even recruited Kelly Johnson, the actor who played the original infamous "Blondini" character. He talks about his transition from crazy Blondini to respectable lawyer in Whangarei. This music video successfully fuses a current reggae hit with 70's film nostalgia for an audience not even born when Pork Pie first hit our screens!
Enjoy!
