Flipside's History (abbreviated version):
Flipside Records was opened in 1993 by John Jameson & Andrew Hawkes in
Victoria St. Originally a Dance / Alternative store, the focus
eventually shifted to a more electronica based style, evolving into
todays diverse range of lounge / downbeat tunes right through to House,
Hip-Hop, Drum 'n Bass and Hard House.
In 1999, the business was sold to todays pilot, Jeremy. Supported by
the team that is Sean, Cuffy and Andy Bell - we love what we do and we
do it well.
Nine Bar:
The NineBar (a bit of a legend and an institution in it's own right)
will play host to a musical mixture and just a little 'mirrorball
madness'
11-2am: Clinton Smiley
Mr Smiley is fast becoming a bit of an international jetsetter as of
late - what with his involvement in the Red Bull Music Academy 'n all.
He holds a Friday night residency at the Matterhorn and regularly rocks
the House with his diverse range of genres.
He is one half of 'Capital Recordings', who are responsible for the
'Earwork02' CD compilation that has just been released, produced for the
most part by NZ musicians (Including DJ Vee - playing at 6am, Jet
Jaguar, Audio Sauce, and Mu & Dallas) but with a couple of big label
tracks from over the sea as well.
With fresh tunes from the UK-a-plenty you can be assured of some fine
funky shit
2-4am: Shadowgirl
Shadowgirl is of Fun Poison and Stereonasties fame. She has been playing
Techno in it's many & varied forms for around 5 years now and currently
co-hosts Radio Active's Stereonasties show along with Agent99, Coda and
B-Lo
4-6am: Marek
Originally from Auckland, Marek is one of Wellington's premier 2-step
DJ's and has played at most 'Steppin Up' parties last year, along with
Ninebar support for various Bass Frontiers parties. 2 Steppin rockin'
action
6am-close: Vee
Vishal is the man for this job. I mean, he really is. Fresh from his
second placing (as 'VEE the ROCK') in the Matterhorn MPC Competition -
Hip-Hop Rockin, Fat US beats, Lots of alchohol and little sleep will
see Vee well primed & ready for this challenge.
StudioNine:
Drum 'n Bass
11-1am: Baritone
Barret is part of Wellingtons 'Beatbreaker' crew. This man with fresh
tunes & a tight selection is set to rock the floor.
1-3am: Filthy Forum
The Filthy forum are DJ Subtrak & MC Unknown.
Subtrak is originally from Auckland and has been keeping a low profile,
producing music for the last year or so at home.
MC Unknown has strong Hip-Hop roots and is originally from Canada. He
used to roll with the Nuclear Fission crew out of V.I.C. and has been
living in New Zealand for around 2 years now.
These boys have a new edge on the world of Drum 'n Bass with a view to
involve the audience, basically bringing a new vibe for the Wellington
Massive to experience.
They will be playing some of their own tunes on the night from both CD &
vinyl and are currently preparing a limited release vinyl run - due for
release late March.
They destroyed the Drum 'n Bass Zone at the Gathering with the premium
12-2am slot on New Years Eve and are under strict instructions for a
repeat performance of this at our Birthday Party.
Don't expect anything normal - coz it's just not gonna happen...
3-5am: Sean
Sean works at Flipside Records, is a member of the Bass Frontiers crew
and, well, is a bit if a D'nB legend in these parts.
A regular on Radio Active's 'Future Funk', he's well primed for this
night.
5am-close: B-Lo
Paul works at Slowboat Records, is a Bass Frontiers and Matterhorn
regular along with many other musically related interests and, like
Sean, really needs no further introduction. Drum 'n Bass at it's finest
(and filthiest)
SubNine:
House !
11-1am: Dave Walker
Dave originates from the US of A and has been in New Zealand for around
8 years now.
He used to play at Liquid Lounge and is currently a resident at Velvet
on Saturday nights. Expect a smooth blend of New York house, funk and
disco from him.
A Student and Playwright by day, playing the Firm breakfast show every
weekday morning from 8-10am and large amounts of sleep deprivation make
Dave a busy man. We look forward to him opening in SubNine for our very
special guest.
1-4am: Dick 'Magic' Johnson (Paper Recordings UK)
Back in the UK, Johnson is part owner of Shaboom, (both a record label
and a recording group) together with Ben Davis and Mark Bell (formerly
of M-People).
Both label and group have been very successful in the past few years,
the tatter releasing their Mecca Funk album in 1998, which spawned the
popular singles Bessie and Sweet Sensation. Shaboom has just done a deal
that means four tracks each year will receive the support of Sony
Music's mega-marketing machine, while Shaboom retain musical control.
Despite Johnson relocating to the other side of the world, the wonderful
age of the internet means that business continues as usual for Shaboom.
He also has strong ties with Paper recordings.
Originally from Lytham, Blackpool he is living in Auckland for a year,
on a sort of informal international exchange program that has to date
involved Soane and Greg Churchill. "I really want to get producing and
working with as many New Zealand artists as possible," enthuses Johnson.
'The work I've done with Soane and Greg has been wicked. I reckon we're
going to be busting some dope tracks in 2002. They're both full of
original ideas and it's a top laugh working with them. Soane's
tea-making has reached new levels in the past year!"
Dick is currently a Saturday night resident at Auckland's Grand Circle
(Lightspeed's Chris O'Donoghue's club - Chris has been instrumental in
forging closer ties between Shaboom, Paper / New Zealand)
For Johnson, spending a year in New Zealand also provides him with the
opportunity to DJ at a variety of venues around the country...
A definite party DJ, we are extremely pleased to have Dick on board to
rock our 8th birthday.
4am-close: Cuffy
Another Wellington legend, Cuffy is Cuffy. Rocking the House every
time, we all know what to expect here!
Curve Bar:
This bar has had many guises over the years and has now been reborn as
'Curve'.
With designer lighting, great decor and a whole new look, this is a
great place for a drink after work or (in our case) for the Hard House
Zone!
Hard House:
11-2am: Leigh
Leigh has been mixing in pubs and clubs since '93. Originally starting
out with beat-up Denon cd players, some three years later he graduated
to a pair of Technics 1200s and began accumulating a vinyl collection.
Having a lifelong interest in all forms of music, he enjoys the full
spectrum of all electronic genres, though over the past few years has
developed a passion for Hard Dance. Leigh's sets mainly encompass UK
Hard House, Nu-NRG, and Hard Trance, though you may also hear anything
from House and Techno, through to hiphop tunes.
With a good ear for crowd-pleasing music, and mixing skills that have
the potential to drive the party into a dancing frenzy, Leigh is
constantly seeking out new sounds from producers looking to expand on
the traditional 'oinky bass and hoovers' hard house sound.
Of late, he has been putting more time into improving his own production
skills and studio equipment, and hopes to have something worthy of
release in the not too distant future.
2am-close: Mr Ree & Mat Blak (back 2 back)
Following on from the success of the '5th Element' at Studio9 on New
Years Eve, and their new clubnite REE-HAB, Mr Ree and Mat Blak are back
once again
to bring you another B2B extravaganza of harder house. Always keen to
bump up the bpm that little bit further, expect a night of non-stop
energy and tougher grooves for the dancefloor.
Technical:
Sound:

the resident system will ensure fat, clear sound for all.

his magic touch.

With a free reign on design & open ideas, get set for a great show and a
few visual surprises.
Many thanks to Stunn Productions for hiring us pretty much all of their
equipment
Visuals:
Freeform have been active in Wellington for a few months now, with
visuals at Bass Frontiers parties and many others.
Dual projectors in SubNine and perhaps a treat in the courtyard will
enhance your visual senses
