About The Blackseeds

The past twelve months have been a landmark year for Wellington reggae-funk band The Black Seeds. The release of their top-selling debut album Keep On Pushing and an exhaustive touring schedule have propelled them well and truly onto the national stage, where they have won recognition as one of New Zealand's most exciting new bands.

Formed in 1998, the eight (sometimes more) piece band produce a uniquely Pacifican blend of soul, funk, reggae and dub sounds that has had dancehalls jumping up and down the country and was captured perfectly by resident sound engineer "Dr" Lee Prebble on The Black Seeds' debut album Keep On Pushing. The album, released by Wellington-based independent record label LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa in June 2001, has been acclaimed in all quarters, earning rave reviews and extensive airplay.

On the back of massive b.net radio support, songs like "Keep On Pushing", "Hey Son" and "Coming Back Home" were hits on both b.net stations' listener-voted charts and New Zealand's national Alternative Radio charts. Songs from Keep On Pushing have also been played on National Radio, Channel Z and other commercial networks. Keep On Pushing was listed in Rip It Up magazine's Top 50 albums of 2001, and to date has sold several thousand copies in New Zealand alone.

The album has spawned three video clips, with a fourth currently in production. The Black Seeds' first music video, for the album's title track "Keep On Pushing", was made by Lord Of The Rings crew member James Barr and despite having been made with next to no budget won awards at both the 2001 New Zealand Music Awards

"Let's rewind a little. It's only been a year and a half since The Black Seeds' first single, "Keep On Pushing", was released on the Radio Active compilation CD. Since then, their following has risen to a level where you can guarantee there will be standing room only at their gigs. Nowadays, people will be crammed shoulder to shoulder in the audience, yet still dancing like no one is watching." - Salient
