I still get confused why dance culture tries to pretend that it's some sort of mainstream popular sound.
For me this has always been about identity and the belief that knowing your identity makes your stronger. So when I see the dance scene struggling for recognition, struggling to be accepted, struggling to be popular, I just wonder why bother?
This is not to say that dance music can't have all these things, I just don't think we need to work in the mainstream for it. Aside from looking 'try hard' the dance scene has always achieved its credibility, popularity and strength in the underground.
I am probably biased, but for an example I was listening to the Urbanology show on George last night and Substance was dropping these kiwi Hip Hop tracks that he is buying from AK rappers who sell their beats at the markets. This stuff is so rare you kinda have to be there Saturday morning and know the guys in person to hook up.
Maybe Scribe 'crossing over' was a good thing? But the stuff I was hearing on Urbanology was raw, fresh and busting up the airwaves with energy. People were txting in wanting get their hands on it, but this is not an all you can eat sound, it true school and proud to be from the street. Thats what dance culture used to be, thats when it was growing not promoting.
Make an argument back. Show me how the mainstream has improved dance culture. Show me why we should compromise the attitudes that started the scene to progress the scene.
