Background

The United Nations are intending to hold the first ever special session of the General Assembly on Drugs, from June 8th to June 10th 1998 in New York. The session was originally conceived as a critical examination of worldwide anti-drug policy. The focus of this session has now been narrowed. According to the new guidelines, only the expansion of existing policies will be open for discussion. The United Nations aims to escalate current drug repression tactics in a catastrophic quest towards a 'drug free' society. In terms of crime, economic and financial damage, and social and personal harm, this policy is turning into a worldwide crisis! It is of great importance that alternative proposals are heard at the onset of this UN session. A clear statement must be made that what is needed is not escalated repression, but reform policies aimed at reducing the damage currently done. In response to this a number of organisations have united to form the 'Global Coalition for Alternatives to the Drug War' and are organising the '1998 Global Days Against the Drug War' on the 6th, 7th and 8th of June. This international event will feature discussion forums, seminars, publications, and press conferences, demonstrations, street parties, concerts and other types of events, in many places at the same time. A 'grand finale' is planned in New York on Monday 8th. Organisations wishing to join the coalition can send mail to alliance@legalize.org or visit the website at http://www.legalize.org

On June 6th the ALCP will put there full support behind 'High Rollers', a drum 'n' bass event showcasing some of Wellington's finest breaks deckticians and live talent.  Grind and Hedonism will once again combine their production strengths. This will be the first time the respective crews have worked together since the 'Unsound' and 'Lab13' dance parties at Lab13 Garrett St last year. Grind fresh from the event 'Revolve' on March 13th are primed to hit the capital with another evening of mad beats and breaks. Determined to showcase nothing but the best, Grind and Hedonism have both staunchly supported local DJ's and Producers. 'High Rollers' will be no different in this respect. A group of DJ's and producers representing every part of the drum 'n' bass spectrum alive in Wellington have been selected for 'High Rollers'. Comprising of Conspiracy, Alan, Zef, and many more. More final details on the line up will be avaliable by the end of the week line up will drop many different flavas of rolling breaks. 20kw of crystal clear JBL sound will provide mighty reinforcement. Grind will once again provide visuals. Using custom computer graphics, live camera feeds and thoughtfully selected movie footage Grinds VJ's provide the tasty eye candy.

All this will take place at the top floor of the Wellington Markets, the headquarters of the Wellington branch of the ALCP. The venue will be under complete transformation for this event and will provide 2 opposing environments. The main dancefloor, a hotbox of sound and movement smoked out by Wellingtons premiere Jungilists. A second room with lo-impact lights and blunted beats will provide a refuge to kick back and get refreshed.

As part of this special event the organisers may be in the fortunate position to screen 'Reefer Madness' and 'The Billion Dollar Crop'. Included in the $15 ticket price will be free entry to those movies. However this is yet to be fully confirmed. On top of this purchasing a ticket to this event will also give the buyer the option of signing up with the ALCP and becoming a member. Show your support for this important cause. The effects of prohibition have been felt for long enough it is time for other policy options to be investigated[sigma]. Decriminalise, Educate, Legislate, Legalise.

Other events coinciding with this spectacular event will be a hacky sack competition on the afternoon of the party. Up for offer as prizes will be a couple of custom painted 'High Rollers' skateboards and passes to the party. The ALCP will also be organising some influential speakers to speak at their own 'Special Session on Drugs'. Details for this are also yet to be confirmed.
